Table of Contents
Why You Need Evony Generals
As mentioned in the introduction, Evony Generals are a vital component of the game that can be used in almost everything you do. And, the better a General is, the better they will be at helping you out in all the different aspects of the game. Certain Generals are also specialists at specific tasks, such as John I of Portugal who grants extra Ranged Troop buffs when placed on Duty in the Archer Camp.
General Roles
As touched on above Generals will often be at their best in a specific role where they will excel beyond other Generals. Below is a list of all the roles that a General can be used in and be sure to check out our complete list of generals to see which role each general is best suited for.
Role | Description |
---|---|
Ranged PvP | Attacking general with ranged troops |
Ground PvP | Attacking general with ground troops |
Mounted PvP | Attacking general with mounted troops |
Siege PvP | Attacking general with siege machines |

Evony General Rarity
There are 8 different rarity types for Evony Generals. The higher the rarity, the better the General. Rarity can be identified by the color of the border around the general’s picture. These are outlined below:
- Green – Common
- Purple – Uncommon
- Blue – Rare
- Purple – Legendary
- Gold – Epic
- Purple Historic
- Orange Historic – same as a Purple Historic but can be Ascended.
- Red Historic
Historic Generals are further identified by the small crown in the top left of their picture as shown below.
Tip: It is recommended to only ever buy and improve Red Historic Generals.
How to get Evony Generals
There are several ways to get Generals in Evony. These are outlined below:
- Tavern – recruit from tavern building
- Wheel – win one on the wheel of fortune at the tavern
- Shop – buy a General Chest from the Battlefield building with the currency earned from BoG and BoC.
- Relics – collect general tokens from relics
- Great General Chest – opened from the tavern after cooldown or from activity
- General’s Invitation – General Portain Exhibition Event where players can exchange General’s Invitations for rare Generals
- Packs – buying packs for real money
The tavern is the easiest way to get a general. However, it is recommended to only ever buy Evony Red Historic Generals as it is a waste of resources to develop anything else. Check out our Evony Beginner’s Tips for more essential information you need when first starting out.
Evony General Stats
Evony Generals have 4 main stats which affect how good they are at certain things. These are outlined below:
- Leadership – increases sub-city training speed, troop HP, and march speed.
- Attack – increases troop attack.
- Defense – increases troop defense.
- Politics – increases sub-city construction and gold production speed, resource gathering speed, and troop death to wounded rate.
Each time you level a general, these stats increase. They can also be increased by cultivating and enhancing your general.
Leveling Evony Generals
Every time you level an Evony General it will increase its stats. The amount it increases by is equal to the stats growth rate. This is shown to the right of the green arrow on the general’s screen, just below the General’s picture. The growth rate can be further increased by enhancing your general.
Generals can be leveled up to the same level as your monarch level and can get experience in the following ways:
- PvP – killing enemy troops
- Monsters – killing monsters on the world map
- Sub Cities – attacking NPC sub-cities
- General EXP Items – added to a general to increase their experience
Tip: Find an NPC Evony Sub City on the world map that you can defeat with low losses. Ensure you have no room for a new sub-city. Attack repeatedly with the Generals you want to level. Read our Evony Sub City Guide for more details.
Guide to Cultivating Evony Generals
This is the process of spending gold and gems to increase your general’s stats with a bonus amount. Each stat can be increased by an additional 500 points through this process. You can use gold to get them up to +300. However, once they are over 300, gold cultivation will no longer work. At this point, you must use Gems to bring them to +500.
This of course starts to cost you a lot of Gems to complete. Read our guide on How to Get Free Evony Gems to ensure you are hitting all possible avenues to increase your Gems count. This will help you get ahead with your Generals.
Evony General Guide to Enhancing
Enhancing an Evony General is the process of increasing their Star Level. It costs gold and medals. A General’s Star Level can be increased up to a maximum of 5 Stars. The must be a certain level before each Star Level increase can be done. Each time a General is enhanced, it increases their stat growth value.
General Level | Star Level | Gold | Medals |
---|---|---|---|
5 | 1 Star | 1m | 40 |
10 | 2 Stars | 2m | 120 |
14 | 3 Stars | 4m | 300 |
18 | 4 Stars | 8m | 800 |
22 | 5 Stars | 15m | 2000 |
General Special Skill
All Historic Evony Generals start with a base skill. This is usually an indicator of what they are best used as. For example, Elektra has a special skill that increases her ranged attack, indicating that she is best used for ranged PvP. A General’s special skill can be seen by navigating to their menu and selecting the gold square box below their stats.
In addition, it should be noted here that certain Generals can be ascended to star level 10. Levels 6 to 10 will add additional buffs to the General’s Special Skill. Keep reading below in this Evony General Guide for more details on Evony Ascending.
Evony General Skill Books
In addition to their Special Skill, all Evony Gold Historic Generals can have a further 3 skills added to them by using Skill Books. Skill Books are obtained easiest from the Wheel of Fortune or by purchasing them from the Skill Books Shop at the Academy building. They can also be crafted using skill book pages. These are collected from events and by disassembling Skill Books you do not want. Skill Books are found in levels 1 to 4.
Applying Evony Skill Books
Skill Books are hard to obtain, especially at their max level of 4. Therefore, it is important to add them very carefully and this is perhaps one of the most important things to know in this Evony General Guide. Each time you add a new skill, there is a chance it will overwrite a Skill Book you previously added. You will likely need several duplicates of each Skill Book that you want to be added before you will succeed.
The optimal way to add them is by first applying all 3 skills you want but in their level 1 form. After this is done, you can add a Level 4 Skill Book of the same type and it is guaranteed to overwrite the Level 1 version of itself. This is probably one of the most important points in this Evony General Guide. Don’t waste your Skill Books! Check out our full Evony Skill Book Guide for more details on this along with a video showing you the optimal way to apply your Skill Books to your Generals.
Evony General Specialty Skills
All Evony Gold Historic Generals have 4 Fixed Specialty Skills and 1 Flexible Specialty Skill that they can learn once they reach level 25. These are additional skills that grant extra buffs when they are upgraded. They can be upgraded 5 times to the following levels:
- Veteran
- Master
- Expert
- Grandmaster
- Genius
The fourth Fixed Specialty is the most powerful of the fixed ones and can only be learned once the first 3 have reached the Genius level. In addition, the Flexible Specialty Skill can also only be learned once the first 3 have reached the Genius level and you are in possession of a Fixed Specialty Box.
Upgrading General Specialties
General Specialties have different methods of upgrading depending on their type. These are as follows:
- Fixed Specialties – upgraded using Gems and Runestones. Lucky Stones can be used to boost the EXP gained with the exchange of each Runstone and Gem.
- Flexible Specialties – can be upgraded to a maximum of level 100. Levels are upgraded by using Runestones. Can also have its quality upgraded, which increases the level cap, by using the corresponding Flexible Specialty Fragments.
How to get Runestones
Runestones are a vital material required for upgrading your General Specialties. They can be found during Special Events, by killing Boss Monsters, as a reward in Server Wars, in BoG, by dismissing Generals, attacking enemies in PvP, and more!
How to get Flexible Specialty Fragments
Flexible Specialty Fragments are required to upgrade the quality of your Flexible Specialties. To get these you must disassemble Flexible Specialities you already own. Flexible Specialties can be gained by taking part in the Hanging Gardens Event or as a reward in the Server War for Battle-Tested Flexible Specialty Fragments.
Flexible Specialty Skill
As mentioned in the previous sections of this Evony General Guide, Flexible Specialty Skills can be learned once you have found a Flexible Specialty and have upgraded a General’s first 3 Fixed Specialties to Genius Quality. Generals can learn any Flexible Specialty that you find and can be changed to another one at any time. Below are the Flexible Specialty Skills currently available and their buff at maximum level and quality.

To find a Flexible Specialty you must open Flexible Specialty Boxes found during the Hanging Gardens Event. Duplicate Flexible Specialties can be disassembled to gain corresponding Flexible Specialty Fragments which are a requirement for upgrading the quality of a Flexible Specialty. You should choose a Flexible Specialty that buffs the Troop Type that the General works best with.
Evony General Covenant
A General will have Covenants available if you can see the flashing icon as indicated in the image above. Each General that has it available can form a Covenant with 3 specific Generals that will be highlighted on the Generals Covenant page. In total, 6 buffs can be unlocked via Covenants with each buff taking effect in one of two ways:
- Only effective for that General.
- Takes effect unconditionally for your whole account.
To see the full list of Covenant buffs that can be unlocked for each General, simply select the Covenant icon when viewing the General. Additionally, this will also highlight under which circumstances the available buffs are active. To unlock a Covenant Buff you must own at least one of the required Generals and then reach certain total attribute milestones to unlock each buff as follows:
- Covenant Buff 1 – 10,000 total attributes.
- Covenant Buff 2 – 12,000 total attributes.
- Covenant Buff 3 – 14,000 total attributes.
- Covenant Buff 4 – 16,000 total attributes.
- Covenant Buff 5 – 19,500 total attributes.
- Covenant Buff 6 – 22,500 total attributes.
Your progress toward these total attribute milestones is calculated as the sum of the attributes of all 3 of the Generals that the General can form a Covenant with, as well as the main General. As such, it is possible to unlock all 5 buffs with just one of them though it will be much easier with all 3. In addition to reaching the total attribute milestones, you will also need 50 Covenant Stones to unluck each buff, these can be earned through Daily Activity:
- 50 Activity Score – 1 Covenant Stone
- 80 Activity Score – 2 Covenant Stones
- 110 Activity Score – 4 Covenant Stones
Evony General Ascending
Certain Generals can be further improved through the Evony General Ascending Feature. This allows you to ascend Generals up to 10 Star levels. This is 5 more levels above what is done through the standard Evony General Enhancing feature. Each star that is added through ascension, will further improve your general. This includes increases to their base stats and an additional buff to their Special Skill for each ascended level.
In order to ascend your Generals, they must first be enhanced to 5-star levels. Following this, you will need to collect Blood of Ares items and further General Fragments to begin ascending. For full details on ascending, check out our Evony General Ascending Guide. Included is information on which Generals can be ascended, which Generals you should ascend, how to get the Blood of Ares item, how to get General Fragments, and information on the buffs your Generals will receive from ascension.
Evony Duty Generals
In Evony, most buildings in your castle can be assigned a Duty General. There generals, grant your building a boost to its function. The size of this boost depends on the General’s Duty Rank. There are 5 ranks, each with certain conditions which must be filled for the General to reach it. The conditions vary depending on the building type. These can be found by navigating to the building, selecting Duty, and then clicking on the “i” icon next to the building. Do not add Skill Books or equipment to Duty Generals, as this does not help you in attack or defense.
Evony Assistant Generals
In certain scenarios, you can assign a General as an Assistant General to the Main General. The current situations where this can be done include the below:
- Attacking Boss Monsters.
- Attacking Event Monsters.
- Attacking Common Monsters.
- Attacking other players in PvP.
- Gathering.
- Relics.
- Reinforcing allies or other buildings.
- Joining monster rallies.
- Wall Defense General.
To be able to assign an Assistant Evony General, the Main General must be at least level 20 and 3 stars. Assigning an Evony Assistant General will have no impact on the attributes, special skills, skills, specialties, ascension attributes, equipment, or Spiritual Beast of the Main General. In addition to this, the basic attributes, ascension skills, equipment, Dragon, and Spiritual Beast of the Assistant Evony General will not take effect. Everything else, skills, specialties, and special skills of the Assistant General will be effective except in the following circumstances:
- Assistant General’s Special Skill is the same as the Main General’s Special Skills/Skills.
- Assistant General’s Skills are the same as the Main General’s Special Skills/Skills.
Please note, that although the buffs of an Assistant General’s Dragon will not take effect, they must still be attached for special skills to be effective if it is a requirement. You can view which skills are effective for the Assistant General by clicking on the magnifying icon when selecting your march.
This opens up a lot of interesting possibilities for PvP and Monster Hunting. For example, you can now add an Assistant Evony General with a march speed boost to your march to much improve the speed with which you can attack monsters. In addition, you can add assistants to your Wall General to perhaps add further defense skills against another troop type. For more details on this topic check out our full Evony Assistant General Guide. It includes information on the best Evony Assistant Generals and some General Pairings you may wish to consider.
Evony General Equipment
You can craft equipment at the Forge building to be attached to your Generals. This can give them huge additional buffs in attack and gathering. To craft equipment, you will need large amounts of materials and rare equipment scrolls. Each General can have 6 pieces of equipment attached to them. This includes each of the following:
- Helmet
- Ring
- Leg Armor
- Armor
- Boots
- Weapon – Sword, Bow, Axe, or Spear
