Infantry Commanders are the most effective at leading Infantry Units in Rise of Kingdoms. They usually possess many talents and abilities that enhance their effectiveness in battle. They are typically known for their great tankiness. This makes them very effective against Cavalry but they are open to the high damage dealt by Archers.
Infantry is without a doubt Rise of Kingdom’s most defensive unit. They are fantastic for prolonged battles in the open field and they are great at protecting garrisons due to their high resistance and primary statistics like Defense and Health! Following this logic, great Infantry Commanders enhance this survivability even further, making them an unkillable frontline for your alliance buddies.
Overall, Infantry Units are probably the most popular in the game, making the Best Infantry Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms highly sought after. Their stats make them great PvP and there is also a number of good Civilizations that are well-suited to Infantry Units.
What Makes a Good Rise of Kingdoms Infantry Commander
A good infantry Commander must enhance the primary attribute of Infantry Units, their tankiness. Whether it’s a health or defense buff, a shield, or damage negation, you want your units to outlast the attacker in a war of attraction.
These commanders are usually also excellent at PVP, especially defending cities and objectives, and in open field battles. While it doesn’t sound right, that the most defense-oriented unit and Commander type is one of the best for PVP battles, it’s totally true. Usually, because the enemies will do laughable damage to you.
Still, it’s incredibly easy to run away from slow Infantry Units for the most part, so while they are great at beating other unit types, it’s incredibly unlikely you will confirm the kill with them.
Best Equipment for Infantry Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms
The grind to a full set of legendary gear is a long one, so at first, it is important to work your way up to a full set of epic items focusing on health, resistance, and overall survivability. Once you’re there, start thinking about legendaries as these are the best items you can get for your Infantry Commanders. Below is what we consider as the most important to least important Legendary Equipment:
- Hope Cloak – Arguably one of the strongest single pieces of gear in the game. This cloak gives your Infantry +12% defense which works wonders to strengthen their tankiness.
- Vambraces of the Eternal Empire – Part of the infantry set, it increases the infantry defense stat.
- Sturdy Boots of the Eternal Empire – Part of the infantry set, it further increases defense while also activating the first set bonus of the “Eternal Empire” set which further increases their defense.
- Eternal Night – Another equipment piece that increases infantry defense by a whopping +12%.
- Horn of Fury – An accessory that gives you a chance to generate more fury in battle, generally really useful for most Infantry Commanders.
- Ring of Doom – This accessory plain and simple gives you a chance to boost your damage every time you attack. While damage is the least important stat for your army of infantrymen, it is still nice to be able to hit a little bit harder.
- Helm of the Conqueror – This is an AMAZING helmet that gives your infantry +15% defense. Why is it one of the least important pieces? Well, it is extremely hard to acquire and nightmarishly costly to upgrade. Focus on acquiring this after you have collected the rest of this set.
- Hammer of the Sun and Moon – The last piece of your build. It gives an amazing +25% to infantry attack. While this is awesome and a big help, once again, damage is the last stat you need to worry about, so leave this for dead last.

Best Infantry Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms
Now you know what makes a good Infantry Commander and how to make the most of them, let’s get straight onto the list of the Best Infantry Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms. If you can get your hands on any of these Commanders you will be in a good place!
5. Guan Yu
Guan Yu is definitely not as flexible or strong as the other picks on this list, but he’s still one of the BEST Infantry Commanders in the game. His Open Field and Caynons gameplay are phenomenal. Indeed, he is also one of the overall Best Legendary Commanders and Best Skill Commanders in the entire game! He also makes our list of the Best Legendary Pairings when working with Scipio Africanus for a formidable Infantry march.
His “Saint of War” skill deals AoE damage, but more importantly, silences those targets for 3 seconds. Silencing 3 Commanders for 3 seconds gives you TONS of advantage in battle. When it comes to Infantry, Guan Yu increases their attack by 30%, march speed by 15%, and upon leaving battle he heals a portion of the wounded units.
4. K’inich Janaab’ Pakal
Pakal is an expert at making Infantry almost unkillable in the open field. His active skill grants his troops a large shield, “Ruler of Palenque”, which increases Infantry Unit health by a massive 30% and also increases their march speed. In addition, his other skills grant his units a damage reduction of 10%, and a further 5% for every single Commander near Pakal when surrounded.
He also has a chance to remove debuffs and his Infantry gain a further 40% attack when sieging cities. Overall, he is not the best in large-scale battles with many Commanders and is better utilized as a tank, shielding allies, in these situations. Pakal finds his true strength through rallying objectives and cities. We also consider him one of the overall Best Legendary Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms.
3. Sargon the Great
Sargon is another titan of open-field skirmishes. He is an Infantry-oriented Legendary that provides incredible buffs to his troop’s attack, defense, march speed, and HP, and can further reduce damage taken by applying a shield to his troops. Sargon does it all!
Indeed, he is also one of the overall Best Legendary Commanders and Best Skill Commanders in the entire game! Just be mindful that some of these effects only apply on the open field. Have him team up with Cheok Jun-gyeong for one of the Best Legendary Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms.
2. Tariq ibn Ziyad
Tariq is probably one of the greatest Commanders in the game right now for rallying cities and objects. He tells a similar tale to others on this list, Infantry under his command gain a ton of attack and defense buffs.
What makes Tariq unique is his bonus damage against Cavalry Units. As you would probably expect, he also appears on our list of the overall Best Legendary Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms and Best Attack Commanders.
1. Scipio Africanus
The legendary Scipio is an Infantry Commander in Rise of Kingdoms with great versatility. He is probably THE best open field Commander in the entire game. Scipio is also one of the best Commanders for city defense, objective defense, and the Canyon content.
You could even use him to rally if you really wanted. Of course, this all means he is also one of the overall Best Attack Commanders, Best Support Commanders, and Best Legendary Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms and one of the Best Legendary Pairings when working with Guan Yu.
