Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms

Commanders specialize in a wide range of disciplines such as Defense and Gathering. However, Commander pairings are mostly concerned with the offensive part of the game such as in the open field with the Best Archer, Infantry, Cavalry, and Leadership Commanders. Here we take a look at the Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms. Make sure to also check out our list of the Best Epic Pairings.

What Makes A Good Commander Pairing

Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms - Sargon the Great

A good Commander pairing must ideally cover their weaknesses. For example, if one Commander has all their skills centered around the offense, bring in a pairing that has a shield, a heal, or offers damage reductions or defense buffs.

Ideally, these Commanders will also empower the same type of unit, so Cavalry Commanders go together, Infantry, Archers, and so on. However, there are some exceptions to this rule in this list of the Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms.

It is also worth remembering that ONLY the Primary Commander in a pairing needs to be upgraded Indeed, it is only their gear and talents that count towards empowering your army. The only thing your Secondary Commander adds to the fight is their passive and active abilities. Learn more about improving your Commanders in our Rise of Kingdoms Commander Guide.

Following this logic, you should also pair up Commanders that benefit from each other’s active skills. If one Commander deals immense damage with their skill why not bring in someone who buffs active skill damage? Another great option is to combine two Commanders with great AoE to wreak havoc in big KvK fights etc.

6. Nebuchadnezzar II (Primary) & Artemisia I (Secondary)

Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms - Sargon the Great (Primary) & Cheok Jun-gyeong (Secondary)

Nebuchadnezzar II, or “Nebu” for short, is a menace out in the open field with great AoE damage for big skirmishes. He is also equally effective in rallying objectives and cities and in the Canyon. Combine him with Aremisia, a powerhouse when it comes to garrisoning cities, great in the open field, and also powerful as a Canyon Commander.

Both Nebu and Artemisia made it to our list of the Best Legendary Commanders in the entire game! And that has to mean something. Nebu can deal retaliatory damage that also debuffs the enemy march speed and he can massively boost his own Archer’s defense and march speed. In addition, he has damage buffs and an enemy rage generation debuff, making him a great all-in-one package and also one of the Best Archer Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms.

As another Archer Commander, Artemisia brings further buffs to these Troops and some heavy offensive damage. This really is a dynamic duo who are great for the majority of content in the game with great Archer defense and attack buffs, along with an increase to march speed.

5. Sargon the Great (Primary) & Cheok Jun-gyeong (Secondary)

This Sargon and CJ combo is an Infantry-focused pairing that is quite powerful in open-field fights, big KvK battles, and rallies. Sargon is the MVP of this pairing and is also one of the Best Legendary Commanders and Best Infantry Commanders in the entire game.

He is mostly known for his amazing Infantry buffs as he empowers their attack, health, march speed, and defense. In addition, he can also occasionally provide a shield for his Troops, further increasing the amount of damage they can suffer before dropping out of the fight.

CJ on the other hand has a very powerful skill attack, an AoE skill, empowers skill damage, and much like Sargon, buffs Infantry march speed and attack. CJ also grants more damage to his army while fighting Cavalry, but suffers more damage from Archers. This is excellent for your army, as some of the meta pairings are Cavalry Commanders, but not so many of them are Archer Commanders.

4. Guan Yu (Primary) & Scipio Africanus (Secondary)

Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms - Guan Yu (Primary) & Scipio Africanus (Secondary)

A godlike combo for an Infantry march. Both Guan Yu and Scipio Africanus made it to our lists of the Best Infantry Commanders and Best Legendary Commanders in the entire game. As such, they bounce off each other like a dream when paired up in the same march.

Guan Yu’s “Saint of War” skill deals AoE damage and silences those hit for 3 seconds. This gives you a massive advantage against multiple targets. Then you have Scipio who reduces the maximum HP of enemies and provides a shield to your Troops. Both Commanders empower Infantry Troops and generate a lot of march speed bonuses for them, making any Infantry army under them a REAL threat to enemy kingdoms.

3. Boudica Prime (Primary) & Yi Seong-Gye (Secondary)

An incredibly devastating pair of Archer Commanders for an archer-oriented march. The Legendary variant of Boudica deals massive skill damage increases enemy skill damage taken, and heals units under her Command, making them able to fight for much longer. She is also one of the Best Legendary Commanders and Best Archer Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms.

Then we have Yi Seong-Gye as a secondary Commander who also deals AoE damage, grants additional rage generation, and increases active skill damage. Combined these Commanders will blow through armies opposing them in a fast manner with their immense skill damage. Not to mention all the damage, defense, march speed, and other buffs that apply to the Archer Troops under their Command.

2. Xiang Yu (Primary) & William I (Secondary)

Best Legendary Commander Pairings in Rise of Kingdoms - Xiang Yu (Primary) & William I (Secondary)

A Cavalry Commander pairing that offers combat prowess over your enemies and march speed to easily run them down or retreat. Both Xiang Yu and William deal great AoE damage so they are great against large groups of opponents in KvK and Canyon.

Furthermore, Xian Yu offers a great skill that reduces the Rage cost of active skills. This pairing can also be used for rallies since Xiang Yu also offers an offensive buff that activates when sieging cities. He also reduces the defenses of his enemies.

William empowers the defenses of his Troops every time his active skill deals damage, with Xiang Yu’s rage cost reduction this happens more often and covers for Xiang Yu’s lack of any defensive buffs or abilities. They both empower the attack and march speed of their Cavalry Troops.

1. Alexander Nevsky (Primary) & Joan Of Arc Prime (Secondary)

A pair of unbelievably strong Cavalry Commanders that combine together beautifully. As you might expect from the Best Legendary Commander Pairing in the game, both of these Commanders also feature in our lists of the Best Legendary Commanders and Best Cavalry Commanders in Rise of Kingdoms.

Alexander offers a nice AoE attack that has a crazy strong defense debuff to surrounding enemies based on how many combatants are surrounding him. Both Joan and Nevksy empower their Cavalry Troops’ damage, defense, attack, and march speed. Furthermore, Joan comes with her own AoE attack that generates rage and increases the damage output of her pairing and any other friendly pairings around.
